Location and Physical Logistics

Patravali is located on Bonampak Avenue, which is short distance from Cancun downtown, Hotel Zone and Puerto Cancun.

  • Transit: From the northern boundary of the Cancun Hotel Zone or downtown Cancun, the restaurant is highly accessible—roughly a 10-minute taxi ride depending on traffic along Boulevard Kukulcan.
  • Physical Access: The restaurant occupies second-floor unit in a complex. Diners must access the promenade and ascend via the central staircase or elevators located near the middle of the complex.
  • Layout & Ambiance: The space features a clean, contemporary aesthetic with expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the boulevard. The indoor air-conditioned seating is comfortable and immersive while the outdoor terrace seating offers views of the boulevard.

The Back Story

An intriguing operational detail of Patravali is its owner Chef Himanshu Mair relocated from India to Cancun in 2013 to bring the millennial traditions of Indian cooking to Mexico’s Caribbean coast. He and his wife/co-founder Fernanda Gallegos also own the Thai restaurant right next door - Apsara Thai Cuisine.

While the menu does cater to carnivores with classic tandoori and seafood options, its execution of vegetarian and vegan dishes is to be commended as well. The menu identifies items with vegan, dairy and meat items clearly. Some of our samplings were:

1. Golgappe (Pani Puri)

  • Execution: Exceptional. Instead of the typical street-style presentation where puris risk becoming soggy, Patravali serves them individually perched atop custom shot glasses filled with spiced mint-and-coriander water and sweet tamarind water. The puris (semolina shells) maintained perfect structural integrity, delivering an immediate, crisp bite upon consumption.

2. Humpty Dumpty

  • Execution: An Indi-Chinese vegetarian novelty featuring crisp, lightly spiced potato- fires and vegetable croquettes sauteed in a sweet-spicy sauce. The exterior retained a greasy texture, while the interior remained soft and highly seasoned for a juicy burst of taste in the mouth.

3. Tawa Subzi

  • Execution: A classic Punjabi preparation of seasonal vegetables seared on a flat-top iron griddle (tawa). Unlike the mushy, over-stewed vegetables common in resort buffets, the veggies here retained an al dente bite.

Service and Dining Metrics

During our visit, crowd density was low. The service staff was attentive with not much time between order and delivery.

The Verdict

Patravali successfully avoids the “tourist-menu” trap. Backed by solid culinary pedigree from an Indian head chef, the menu is rigorous and the kitchen delivers sharp, texturally precise Punjabi and South Indian fare that justifies its high rating. For travelers seeking an authentic Indian break on the Mexican carribean coast, it is a highly recommended stop.
