Amtrak is transitioning its Amtrak Cascades service—which runs from Vancouver, British Columbia, down to Eugene, Oregon—to a brand-new fleet of Siemens Airo trainsets. Before these state-of-the-art trains can welcome paying passengers, Amtrak and Siemens Mobility must execute a highly structured, three-stage validation program using a single test trainset.

The Technical Upgrade: Legacy vs. Siemens Airo

The Three-Stage Testing Framework

Stage 1: Factory and Closed-Loop Track Testing

Conducted primarily at the Siemens Mobility manufacturing facility in Sacramento, California, and specialized testing facilities, this stage validates the core mechanical and electrical integrity of the trainset.

  • Focus Areas: Static weight distribution, structural load tolerances, initial braking capability, and high-voltage electrical diagnostics.
  • Status: Active validation.

Stage 2: Mainline Clearance and System Integration

Once cleared for regional transit, the test trainset moves to the Pacific Northwest corridor for physical clearance and signaling validation.

The final phase simulates real-world operations without passengers on board.
